I am lucky enough to start 2012 off right; by having a mini-workshop with Jenn Ackerman and Tim Gruber. I have been helping, learning and laughing with them for the past couple weeks. It's been a really incredible experience and I appreciate them taking time to help a young photographer. They have truly taught me how to see a familiar landscape of 17 years with new eyes. This first photo is Jenn with her 4X5 and Tim with his Hasselblad on the ice last week. The rest of the photos are from our time together on a lake in Chisago County while Jenn worked on her Frozen project.
I was able to assist Jenn with her 4X5 and shoot some frames on my Diana.

"Pictures have beginnings, but not ends"- Eugene Richards

Words spoken on the first night of a weekend that I believe marks a true beginning in my life.

Every year Alyssa and August Adams graciously open up their home to 100 new members of the Adams family... along with incredible speakers, team leaders, producers, editors, and volunteers on the black and white teams; the barn is filled to the brim and then some.

Whether it was getting to know another student, listening to a speaker or working with any of the incredible faculty; every moment was a learning experience at Eddie Adams. I got to meet people I have looked up to for years and be exposed to new work and ideas I wouldn't have seen otherwise. Most importantly, I was reminded how important the photojournalism community is today. We are lucky to be apart of a giant family of creative intelligent beautiful people.

I was incredibly lucky to work with 5 badass female photojournalists who guided my team through the theme of family. Carolyn, Melissa, Elizabeth, Nancy and Amanda-Thank you so much for you guidance, support and laughter throughout the weekend. Thank you to team orange for being so awesome! Also thank you to Alyssa and August Adams for allowing us into your home.

I also really enjoyed working on my story over the weekend and getting to know Moriah, Diane, Crystalee and Jylissa. Thank you for letting me into your lives and telling your story. In my personal life following EAW I have been challenged to understand what family means, but looking through my photos I am quickly reminded by the Beattie-Redling family.

Moriah and Diane adopted Crystalee and Jylissa after living with them in foster care. I spent the first day with the family as they prepared for Crystalee's confirmation service and the second day around the house. The conversations I had with Diane and Moriah are some of my favorite parts of EAW. The selection of photos isn't my complete story edit-but for now some of my favorite photos from the project.

I made it! After 96 hours in Minneapolis, I have been in Peoria for almost two weeks.

This fall, I am the photo intern at the Peoria Journal Star. So far, I have really loved the position.

I get to work with a phenomenal photo staff, shoot a variety of assignments everyday and learn a lot!

Here's a photo I took when I was feature hunting when my editor, told me to go drive around Peoria for a few hours and get to know the city.

This past weekend I had the entire weekend off and it so happened that Taylor and Ryan were in Columbus. So, I drove down to Ohio for the weekend for a beautiful visit. But it also reminded me that its been a month since I graduated and things have slowly begun to change. It also reminded me that I never did a post about graduation.

In case my other blog posts haven't explained it...

I am in Chautauqua, NY for the summer at The Chautauquan Daily as a photo intern.

I am really looking forward to shooting this summer in such a beautiful place.

I miss Columbia a lot more than I thought I would. I miss seeing my best friends every day. I miss going on photo adventures outside of Columbia. I miss walking into Lee Hills Hall and knowing that someone I love will be there. I miss cooking beautiful food with my boyfriend. But most importantly, I miss the incredible community of people that became a part of my life for the past four years.

Looking back on my college experience, I feel incredibly lucky. I have had some of the best mentors and professors any photojournalism student could ask to have teach them. This past year at The Columbia Missourian has been a perfect example of how professors can have a positive impact.

It's not a secret how much I loved my time at Mizzou and without any hesitation, I would do it all over again. I would just like to thank everyone for making my time at Mizzou truly incredible.

I owe you big time.

My dad and I made the journey out to Chautauqua, NY by taking some roads we had never seen before.

We went through Wisconsin, and up through the upper peninsula of Michigan.
Then up into Canada, through Toronto and back down to the states via Niagara Falls.
It was one of the best experiences I have ever had with my father.

My Final Project: In A Different Room.

I was diagnosed with ADD in 5th grade after a teacher noticed my lack of attention in class and constant frustration with math. I have taken medication throughout my educational career, which was a tough pill to swallow sometimes. Growing up and feeling somehow "less than" was a huge hurdle that I had to get over. I was stubborn about not wanting extra help because I didn't want to admit that I needed it. It wasn't until high school that I was finally mature enough to understand that accepting help was the right way to deal with my ADD.

I have wanted to do a personal project about growing up with ADD or ADHD for a long time.

I just didn't feel up to the challenge.

Meet Max Kaplan. Max is an 18 year old sophomore at Harrisburg High School. He lives in Sturgeon, Missouri on a farm with his mom and dad. Max was diagnosed with ADHD in 1st grade. At first he took Ritalin, but switched to a newer drug called Focalin. His ADHD affects his reading and English abilities, for which he was frustrated by throughout his childhood. He attended a private school in Columbia and continued to struggle with reading. His parents began to worry about his reading comprehension and had him tested. It was found that in 5th grade, Max was at a 2nd grade reading level. He was then moved to the Harrisburg school district. While he does well in school, he finds his personal confidence in the work he does on his family's farm with their cattle and steers. He is the president of his 4H club and often competes in cow shows around the country.

After my last assignment, I wanted to take a different approach to shooting my character profile.

I had worked with Kate briefly during my time as a staff photographer for the Columbia Missourian, but I had a gut feeling my time wasn't done with her.

Kate is a world champion power lifter and yoga teacher in Columbia.

Kate utilizes her inner spirituality in these physical activities and throughout her life.

I really enjoyed the time I spent with Kate and her friends, students and family during this project.

I am extremely grateful to Kate for allowing me to help tell her story.

I hope to keep photographing Kate in the future.

Picture Story: Bird By Bird Reading

I appreciated this chapter because it talks about not judging a story too quickly and sticking around with a subject. My strength in photojournalism is long-term story work. I am a firm believer in keeping in touch with subjects and continuing work, as someone story really never ends. It also shows the importance of the relationship between a photojournalist and their subject. If you disappear from your subjects life, sometimes it comes off in a bad way. They invest time with the photojournalist, and it can come off as the photojournalist simply using their story for personal gain.

I also thought it was interesting to look at death as a way subjects open up about their lives. I have never worked with someone who is close to this stage in their life. But I think it's an interesting way for a subject to reflect on their life and have it documented.

One Day Story: The Swan Dive

“I can’t believe I’m doing this,” Kalya Klemme giggles to her older brother Jason as they get into their costumes for the Polar Bear Plunge. Kayla plays on several different teams in the Special Olympics organization and her brother is a coach too. For the past three years, Kayla has watched her older brother participate in the plunge.

Now, as the beautiful swan with her ugly ducklings, Kayla attempts the polar plunge.

POYI Reaction

I was utterly impressed with much of the POYI judging this year. Some of it was hard to watch, for example, in the world understanding category, when the judges were dismayed by having to award any of the projects. However, most of it was a joy to be able to experience, some of the most innovative pieces I saw this year were rightfully awarded.

It was also interesting to see the same stories awarded in different categories. One of my favorite pieces by the Virginia Pilot was, "The Chosen Ones". This story receieved awards in feature picture story, newspaper editing, single image categories and multimedia. What I love about this story is how each of the 5 sense of string components are so strong, the story would be lacking without one of them. I also appreciate the sensativity towards the subjects that is apparent in the photographs.

I also like Damon Winter's "A Grunts Life". I thought it was interesting how so many people got caught up in how he took the images, they forgot to really look at the photos themselves. Many of the images are strong, catching moments of intimacy between soliders, solid framing and light usage too. I also respected Winter's graceful decision to bow out from the blog debates and wait until the dust had settled to make any comment on the award for his photograph. His points about making the toning decisions before he shot the photographs was an important one, and made other photographers consider their useage of settings in camera.

Of all the CPOYs and POYIs never have I seen judges voice so much disappointment over a category like they did for the Global Vision Award. The judges were frusterated with the lack of editing down weak images, which only brought down the strong ones. The judges were also frusterated with the lack of time and effort that seemed to be put into many of the stories. I learned a lot about editing from sitting in on that judging session, never do I want someone to groan when they see my portfolio like these judges did.

I also enjoyed sitting in on the freelance feature picture story category. The judges, to Rick Shaw's dismay, actually approached a few of us after judging and asked what we thought of their decisions. With Rick's permission, we engaged in an interesting conversation about the mood of a lot of the stories and the overall feeling for the entries. This conversation was a treat. One of the most interesting conversations that took place during this category was the validity of how one of the people was holding a gun in a photograph. One of the judges commented, "I know people who shoot guns, and they have showed me how they do it. That's not how you hold a gun."

I also apprecaited the different feeling a lot of the winners had in this category. Often POYI and other competitions are pigeon holed into this stereotype of only awarding sad, depressing stories. The Black Label Bike Club is a great example of breaking this mold, it's an excellent quirky story about a subculture. It doesn't make you cry, but it grabs you the way a good picture story should.

Picture Story #5-Jay & Hurn Reading

Finding a subject is always an interesting process. Sometimes things easily fall into your lap and other times it feels like you're running a marathon that simply will not end. One of the points I agree with from the reading is always hvaing a notebook with you, because they are absolutely correct in saying that during the quiet moments, great ideas will come to you. In Denmark, I always carried a moleskin with me and during my bus rides to class, I came up with some of my strongest ideas.

Another important point that was brought up in the reading was how visual a subject could be. Sometimes, I come up with a great idea and try to push for its quality as a story. But in the end, the story is better in words and lacks visual variety and content to be a strong photo story. It's important as a photojournalists to always look for the visual potential in a story before getting in so deep, that you are grasping for photos that simply aren't there.

Picture Story #2: Photographer Perceptions.

For this blog post- I am responding to readings for my picture story class. I am truly inspired by the Tao of Photography readings, it provides a breath of fresh insight and a different way to look at methods of shooting and thinking about photography.

I think many photojournalism students at one point or another get mentally lost in their classes; meaning they loose sight of their own expectations and follow what they think is expected of them. These readings are a great way to get back in touch with what you expect from yourself. While this reading covered a handful of topics, a couple of them really stuck out to me. One of these topics was the differences between "little" and "great" understanding. The "little" understanding focuses on the technical aspect of photography and the "great" understanding focuses on the artistry part of photography. To obtain a great understanding there has to be a balance with knowledge from the little understanding. Sometimes people get lost in what makes a good photographer, but this balance of understanding is a great way to explain that it isn't just one component.

I also liked the Bird by Bird readings, regarding failure and overcoming the first attempts of a story. When I begin a story, the fear of failure and not making that first point of contact looms over my head. I liked how she encouraged her students and told them to basically get over it and get tough. After many story failures, I have found that its much easier to get over rejection and move on.

Picture Story #1-The Great Picture Story.

A great picture story isn't just defined by the technique and intimacy that is seen in the image sequence. For a picture story to achieve the next level of visual story telling it has to engage the viewer in a compelling way.

I was standing in awe of Thomas Lekfeldt story, A Star In The Sky, at last years Danish Photographer of the Year exhibit when I noticed something strange and familiar. The man and little girl who were also looking at the images appeared in the photographs; it was Vibe's father and twin sister. As hard as I tried, I couldn't look away for long. The emotions that the father experienced in looking at Lekfeldt's work was a wide spectrum. But, the images spoke to him and told a beautiful story about his daughter's life. He felt something.

This story is one of my all time favorite visual stories. I remember the chills I felt when I first saw the sequence and I still get them when I see certain images to this day. That's what I want to push in my images is the emotional connection between three parties: the subject, the photographer and the viewer. I am still impressed with the variety of strong images in this story. Every frame has a purpose and adds something different to the story.

Another strong element in this story is the amount of time he spent with this family. By working with the family for almost a year and a half, he was able to gain access and intimacy, as well as telling a complete story. Often there are parts of photo stories that are missing because the photographer simply didn't have enough time or access, but not in this situation. Lekfeldt was able to photograph every aspect of this story that would likely give other photojournalists road blocks.

LaNee Graduates.

Shortly after finishing my Boone Life story about LaNee, I quickly realized that I wasn't done documenting her life. A couple weeks ago, LaNee finished her undergraduate career. As it was my first day reporting at the Columbia Missourian, I was able to write a story about the Arts & Science graduation and document her walking across the stage.

As a photographer, there are moments I document that leave me speechless. As I watched LaNee walk across the graduation stage with her son Jai, I was at a loss for words. The grace and poise she presented on the stage was a beautiful way for her to make a statement about her achievement.

These are my first attempts from my 1953 Coronet that I got in London over the summer and my Diana. The Black and White film is from London. I couldn't get the film out of the camera until my friend Gorm was here recently and fixed the camera for me. I got the camera at one of the stands selling older cameras at Portobello Road Market, one of my favorite places in London. Not only are the antique finds fantastic, but the people watching is too. With this camera, you have to shoot from the hip, and there is no shutter speed or aperture settings. I'm looking forward to learning how to use this camera better.

The next frames are from my new Diana camera that I got for my birthday. I love using this camera! I was also given a lomo ringflash for the Diana as my Christmas gift from the Danes. It's been fun to use on my Diana, but it also works on Nikon and Canon!

I predict a long, beautiful relationship with my Diana.

This semester, the theme for the photo column, Boone Life is environment. For my story, I chose to make the idea environment the stereotype that LaNee Bridewell faces as a young, black single mother. Working with LaNee was a truly rewarding experience as a photojournalist. I am excited to continue my work on this story as she graduates this month from the University of Missouri and continues onto graduate school. #5. Stockholm. The Reunion.

After the Netherlands, I took a train under the English Channel and spent a week in the United Kingdom with my mother. I'll post those photos soon. After London, I flew back to Denmark and took a train from Copenhagen to Stockholm. Watching the familiar Scandinavian scenery through the train windows almost felt like home. I stayed with my dear friend Jenny at her parents flat in the city center. I also spent time with her wonderful boyfriend Johannes, my other friend from DSJ Katherinne and her boyfriend Mathias. While Jenny worked during the day, I explored the beauty that is Stockholm. Jenny also made sure that I got my fair share of Swedish experiences including, the Stockholm zoo for a Swedish televised sing-a-long and lots of Herring. One of my favorite parts of my trip was our conversations during breakfast on her balcony with a perfect view of the city skyline. It was a wonderful way to say goodbye to two girls who were a big part of my experience in Denmark.

After Rome, I stopped in Nice for a few days for some much needed napping on the beach. I loved being back in France, speaking as much French as I could and having picnics on the beach. It was my first time enjoying the beautiful clear water of the Mediterranean. I put my camera down for most of my time in Nice, and the photos I did take serve as nice memories of the morning markets. But enough of Nice, after electrical problems, missed trains and long dashes through Gare De Lyon I made it to Amsterdam. I met up with my wonderful Danish friend Maja for this portion of my trip. We had a truly great time and I still owe her some photos, but here are some of my favorites.

Florence. #1

Florence was my first stop on my train backpacking journey. For 10$, I went from Aarhus-Hamburg-Munich-Florence. I arrived at 6:15 in the morning, reuniting with Shelby Stone after 7 months. It was so great to see Shelby after such a long time. I fell in love with Florence, and ended up staying a couple days longer than I originally planned. Florence exceeded my expectations.

From my journal-"The light in this city is beyond beautiful. It creeps around alleyways and creates shapes and lines that make photographers melt."

Let me come Home

Home is wherever I’m with you…

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros

For the past 6 months, Aarhus, Denmark has been my home.

But it’s been so much more than that. A place of learning, inspiration, challenges, and fun.

This study abroad experience has been more than I could have ever expected or hoped for.

When I left the states, I was very much in a rut, both personally and with my photography. I was making the same photographs over and over again and couldn’t push past it. I was ready for a change and a challenge.

Working at the Danish School of Journalism pushed me harder than I have ever worked in my entire life. And I loved every second of it. There’s an energy when you work with the students and teachers, a passion and focus for what they do that’s not only inspiring, but also contagious. I found myself feeding off this energy within the first few weeks of being in Aarhus.

I am extremely lucky to have worked with the other photographers in my program. Learning, laughing, “debating” and struggling together, we made it. Their final projects are incredible. Iranian youth in Milan, Refugee camp in Denmark, Christian youth in Denmark, Armenian wounded veterans, Czech nurses, Community garden culture of Denmark and Pig farms in Denmark. They all told important visual stories through multimedia and magazine layouts. I will miss our dinner parties, critique sessions, bus rides and karaoke.

But, I have also been lucky to get to know other students as well. Working with my friends in the other international programs has been so meaningful. Being surrounded by so many different cultures and perspectives has only inspired me to travel more but increased my curiosity about the world.

I loved working with the Danish photojournalism students. Through working with them, they have inspired, pushed and pulled with me at my photography and could be responsible for a major part of why my photography has evolved. They taught me to push the boundaries, break the rules, and work outside the box I felt trapped in. By the end of the semester I was hearing things like, “Oh Eve! You are beginning to shoot European” or “Eve, the American photographers aren’t going to know what to do with you.”

I’m making photos that I never thought I could make, telling stories that I only dreamed of telling. And I know, that this is the beginning of a whole new chapter in my photography and adult life.
I can’t remember the last time I was this truly happy.

I am looking forward to my going back to my “homes” in Columbia and Minneapolis. Listening to this new song I was just introduced to, I am beginning to realize why Aarhus has become such a “home” to me. It’s the people…and I already miss them.

So here I go. Cedric, rail pass, backpack in tow, I’m off to start an adventure I have been waiting a very long time to begin. To leave Aarhus, it’s difficult. But, I’m ready. And I’m pretty sure I’ll be back much sooner than I ever thought. So, for now, it’s see you soon.

My Final Project. Siempre Juntos.

This is my final project for my semester abroad at the Danish School of Journalism.

This is a story about Antonio and Fernando. Now living in Madrid, they moved from

Mexico City to be open about their relationship and sexuality.

I came to Madrid with high hopes for another story, and everything that was planned didn't happen. So, with a bit of luck, coincidence and my overtly outgoing personality,

I met Antonio and Fernando.

Meeting them in Madrid, listening to their stories and having the privilege of becoming a part of their lives on such a short notice and tight schedule, was an incredible experience.

Many thanks to them for allowing me to document their lives.

As I have said before with other projects,

I look forward to working on this project in the near future.

Many times I was asked, "Why Spain for your final project?

For me, it was about following a re-occuring piece of advice that simply would not go away.

“Eve, you have to learn how to trust yourself and follow your gut.”

My gut told me Spain. My gut told me Madrid.

I originally wanted to tell a story about the economic situation in Spain. Even thought my final project took another path, I still went and took photos at the protest on June 8th.

"uno, dos, tres."

With the announcement to begin the march, so came the rain. It was very fitting for the overall mood of the protest. It seemed to raise the energy level, and not turn people away.

The protest was held by several unions who have been affected by the new austerity package presented by the Spanish government in an effort to save the already sinking economy.

75,000 people attended and tried to make their voices heard.

This is only the first of several protests that are taking place in Spain.

Here is an example of some of the more impulsive, super fun things I did during the protest. Other fun activities included: Getting on the CNN press riser, getting a Spanish press pass, following by example and standing on cafe tables, and climbing a 10ft press riser in the pouring rain.

I loved every second.

“I made a decision 26 years ago, I wouldn’t let HIV beat me.”

Steven Rotherforth lives with his partner, in a small town outside of Copenhagen, Denmark. Originally from Great Britain, Steven ended up living in Copenhagen after a stop on his tour performing as a drag queen. Steven has been very involved in the HIV community of Denmark and helped bring the NAMES AIDS quilt project to Denmark.

My brief time with Steven was an experience I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Listening to his stories about touring with his drag queen group throughout Europe and philosophies about life was nothing less than inspirational and captivating.

He started performing as a drag queen by a random coincidence when he was 16 years old. He toured Europe through the 1970-1990’s. He still performs for private parties.

At some point during our conversation, Steven brought out a large scrapbook, filled with photos and posters from his touring years. He pointed out which friends and family members he had lost to AIDS and laughed at small memories that came out of the woodwork from looking at the photos again.

“When I was a teenager, I always looked older and now the opposite has happened. As I get older, I look younger.” Steven has been HIV positive for 26 years. The doctors are impressed with his overall health and say that he has the health of someone much younger than him.

By the end of our conversation, I found that my thoughts were coming at me from all sides and simply said, "Steven, you have lived so much."

He simply replied, "And there is so much life to live still."

Elsebeth Boesen, husband and three children live on an organic farm in southern Denmark. Living their lives as “organically” as they can, the family still strives to live an organic life against the demands of a modern society. The farm has horses, pigs, cows, cats and a dog. They also grow wheat and grain, along with a variety of fruit and vegetables. Elsebeth is realistic about her “simple country life” and understands that not everyone can identify by it. However, she does try and help people on ‘farm holiday’ understand the simple pleasures of life on an organic farm.

I would love to hear some comments! I consider this a personal 'first draft' and plan to make changes...

For my spring break, I went to Paris to visit my cousins Lauren and Joelle. They have been living there since August, studying fashion at ESMOD. ESMOD is a fashion design school, with 21 different locations around the world. I was beyond impressed with the creativity and style of the students..(including my cousins). I came to class with them a couple of times and took photos..I couldn't help myself. Here are some of my favorites.

Not My Usual Style.

We were assigned a portrait series during our first workshop. Due to our teacher having to go shoot an assignment in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (I know..I know), these assignments were just critiqued. Mads wanted the series to have continuity in the lighting, environment, distance, toning and subject matter.

During my freshman year at Mizzou, I shot a story for The Maneater on the Columbia Roller Derby Team. I was amazed and intimidated all at the same time. These girls are Bad Ass. I wanted to continue my work with the sport in Denmark. So, I took portraits of the team for my assignment.

After our lecture about portraiture, I decided to really go outside my comfort zone for the series. I also wanted to add the feeling of roller derby too. So, I shot direct single flash. Here are a few of my favorites...

I Love You From The Bottom of My Heart.

Our 2nd assignment for the photo workshop in Copenhagen was given on Wednesday, shot on Thursday and critiques on Friday. We had to take photos for a "Day in the Life" story. The subject had to be a stranger...We had to spend 5 hours with them and at some point go into their home. Meet Louise and Amalie Almeborg, my subjects for the assignment. Louise, 24, is a single mother to her 2 1/2 year old daughter Amalie. They live about 40 minutes outside of Copenhagen. They moved into their apartment a couple months ago, and Louise is trying to make it feel like home. I have never seen a 2 1/2 year old with more personality than Amalie. Even with a bad case of the chicken pox, she acted like nothing was wrong. Louise is a truly dedicated mother. She told me that one of her favorite things to say to Amalie is, "I love you from the bottom of my heart." One day, they were walking to kindergarten and Amalie looked up at her mom and repeated the phrase out of the blue. If anything could summarize this relationship it would be this.

Revealing Preview.

My teachers have been encouraging me to begin thinking about shooting more "personal" projects. As a photographer, we use the camera as a vehicle to reveal something about our subject. So, it's a little intimidating when the subject matter hits close to our own personal values. I decided to give it a try for our first assignment during the Copenhagen workshop. It was a free assignment, so we were able to choose anything. After some research and colorful conversations, I ended up at the Carolineskolen, a Jewish day school in Copenhagen.

I spent the day taking photos of the kindergarten as they focused on the upcoming holiday

of Passover. I am sending the photos to the school for permission to post them,

but here is a preview of the assignment.
