Advanced Techniques: Fill Select

About a month ago, Tony Hawk and his team from Birdhouse rolled into Columbia. I thought I was shooting direct flash. I was quickly corrected about this misconception during our next photo lecture about fill light. The light kept changing from very sunny to overcast within a matter of minutes. Now that I understand what I was actually shooting, I understand the concept of fill light much better.

Tony Hawk signs a Columbia fan's skateboard on October 17, 2009. Hawk's skateboard company, Birdhouse is doing a tour across the nation. They have been promoting the tour by using the social networking website, Twitter.

I think the colors show that the photo is a bit blown out. However, all of the shadows that would have appeared from the baseball cap and the skateboard have been corrected with the fill flash.

A little info.

My photo
I am recent graduate of the University of Missouri, majoring in photojournalism. Right now, I am a photo intern at The Dallas Morning News. Last year, I attended the Danish School of Media and Journalism in the International Photojournalism program. I love the journey of working on a photo story, the destination is never what was predicted.
