I have known Sara for a very long time. We carpooled to Hebrew school together, both went to Temple Israel and I was her OZO at Herzl Camp. So, when I came home for Rosh Hashana and Sara's mom asked me to take her senior portraits, I was thrilled. I am excited about so many of these photos, that before I went out for the evening I wanted to post at least one. Sara was so easy to work with this afternoon, which made it really fun. I will be posting more photos over the next couple days.

Why Hello Mr. 50mm...
Thanksgiving break has begun. I love Thanksgiving break because I get to celebrate my birthday again with my family and it's a week of non-stop eating. What could honestly be better? Today, my first birthday wish was granted and I got a 50mm Nikkor lens with a f/1.8. This week just became a bit more exciting. Here's another reason why I am happy to be home:

Advanced Techniques: Multiple Flash Assignment
For this assignment my group got the opportunity to work with more dancers from Stephens College. I worked with Senior Krystal Bryan. She has been a dancer for 9 years. I wanted to use a prop to add something more to the photo. After finding a stool in the room, I asked Krystal to do some dance moves on the stool. I used 3 dyno-lights for my lighting setup. The first photo is my select for the assignment and the others are outtakes.
I really like the 2nd photo, but didn't make it my select because I lost the light on her left side. I am looking forward to working with Krystal again in the future.

Advanced Techniques: Balance Select
This part of the assignment was a lot harder than I thought it would be. To balance light with a flash, you have find the right exposure for the light outside and use your flash inside at the same time. This past week, Columbia has broken through months of clouds and had a week of sunny days. I got lucky with the beautiful light yesterday, which helped with this assignment.
Gotcha employee Jesse Foss moves comic books into boxes at Getcha Bazaar on November 11, 2009. Getcha Bazaar is a seasonal store owned by Gotcha that was only open for the Halloween season. Foss and other employees were moving merchandise from Getcha Bazaar to Gotcha.
Advanced Techniques: Fill Select
About a month ago, Tony Hawk and his team from Birdhouse rolled into Columbia. I thought I was shooting direct flash. I was quickly corrected about this misconception during our next photo lecture about fill light. The light kept changing from very sunny to overcast within a matter of minutes. Now that I understand what I was actually shooting, I understand the concept of fill light much better.
Tony Hawk signs a Columbia fan's skateboard on October 17, 2009. Hawk's skateboard company, Birdhouse is doing a tour across the nation. They have been promoting the tour by using the social networking website, Twitter.
I think the colors show that the photo is a bit blown out. However, all of the shadows that would have appeared from the baseball cap and the skateboard have been corrected with the fill flash.
