MinneSNOWta
Oh the weather outside is..well it isn't frightful to me at least. Every time it snows, a serene wave comes through the town and creates a unified silence. Everything is still and calm. Well everything except Maggie who couldn't handle the other dogs at the dog park today. I waited until the snow halted for a bit and ventured outside to take some photos. I wish I could clear the roads up to Duluth and take my board out for awhile.

These are a few of my favorite things...
My dad. He grabbed his hat that he bought in Montana over the summer and pretended to be a Rabbi from Montana. Hilarity ensues.

20 Days.
20 days. That's all I have left before I leave for 7 months. Discussions of volunteer programs and photo story possibilities are filling my house, and leaving me with happy thoughts. So, I guess the countdown has begun. Here's a photo I found after coming across a section of photos from the orphanage that somehow got placed in the wrong folder.

In Dedication to Alex Browning and Taylor Glascock.
For my birthday, Alex and Taylor got me a gnome to bring on my travels. They said they would know I was thinking about them when I posted a photo of the gnome. So, here it is...my first gnome photo. We randomly got a globe in my house while I was at school and thought it was the perfect introduction. His name is Cedric. His passport defines him as A woodland creature who willingly leaves his or her forest or garden to travel around the world. I would love to do a gnome of the day post as I travel over the next 8 months. So, meet Cedric, my new travel companion!

Sara G Preview..
I have known Sara for a very long time. We carpooled to Hebrew school together, both went to Temple Israel and I was her OZO at Herzl Camp. So, when I came home for Rosh Hashana and Sara's mom asked me to take her senior portraits, I was thrilled. I am excited about so many of these photos, that before I went out for the evening I wanted to post at least one. Sara was so easy to work with this afternoon, which made it really fun. I will be posting more photos over the next couple days.

Why Hello Mr. 50mm...
Thanksgiving break has begun. I love Thanksgiving break because I get to celebrate my birthday again with my family and it's a week of non-stop eating. What could honestly be better? Today, my first birthday wish was granted and I got a 50mm Nikkor lens with a f/1.8. This week just became a bit more exciting. Here's another reason why I am happy to be home:

Advanced Techniques: Multiple Flash Assignment
For this assignment my group got the opportunity to work with more dancers from Stephens College. I worked with Senior Krystal Bryan. She has been a dancer for 9 years. I wanted to use a prop to add something more to the photo. After finding a stool in the room, I asked Krystal to do some dance moves on the stool. I used 3 dyno-lights for my lighting setup. The first photo is my select for the assignment and the others are outtakes.
I really like the 2nd photo, but didn't make it my select because I lost the light on her left side. I am looking forward to working with Krystal again in the future.

Advanced Techniques: Balance Select
This part of the assignment was a lot harder than I thought it would be. To balance light with a flash, you have find the right exposure for the light outside and use your flash inside at the same time. This past week, Columbia has broken through months of clouds and had a week of sunny days. I got lucky with the beautiful light yesterday, which helped with this assignment.
Gotcha employee Jesse Foss moves comic books into boxes at Getcha Bazaar on November 11, 2009. Getcha Bazaar is a seasonal store owned by Gotcha that was only open for the Halloween season. Foss and other employees were moving merchandise from Getcha Bazaar to Gotcha.
Advanced Techniques: Fill Select
About a month ago, Tony Hawk and his team from Birdhouse rolled into Columbia. I thought I was shooting direct flash. I was quickly corrected about this misconception during our next photo lecture about fill light. The light kept changing from very sunny to overcast within a matter of minutes. Now that I understand what I was actually shooting, I understand the concept of fill light much better.
Tony Hawk signs a Columbia fan's skateboard on October 17, 2009. Hawk's skateboard company, Birdhouse is doing a tour across the nation. They have been promoting the tour by using the social networking website, Twitter.
I think the colors show that the photo is a bit blown out. However, all of the shadows that would have appeared from the baseball cap and the skateboard have been corrected with the fill flash.

Advanced Techniques: Multimedia Assignment
For today's class, we had to find an audio slide show online and post the link for it. I found my audio slide show from nytimes.com. I love their multimedia section because it has a lot of variety. There are slide shows, audio slide shows, interactive maps and other interactive info graphics too.

January 10th, 2010.
My step-mom almost knows me too well. Without fail, every time we go on a trip, she always emails me the itinerary for the flight. She knows that nothing brings me more joy then getting that awaited email. This morning I was greeted with a reminder email that I will be leaving January 10th for India. I can't wait to go back to a place I love so much.

Joe McNally Magnificence
This week, Joe McNally came to Mizzou and worked with my adv. techniques class. We went over to Stephens College and worked with 3 of their ballet students. I will remember this experience forever. I learned so much about lighting and leading the life of a photographer from our short time with him. I really appreciate our photojournalism department, especially Rita, for bringing him to work with us. I used a Nikon D3 to take the following photos, I love that camera.

Painting With Light Lab..a little late.
So, this week I am working on my actual painting with light project. I am really excited to put it all together, it's going to be great! However, thinking about the project made me realize that I didn't put up my painting with light lab photos. As a class, we went to Rock Bridge Park and learned about, you guessed it..painting with light. It's a different concept to think about light as the subject of the photo, rather than a factor that adds to the subject. Here are a few attempts from that evening:
I'm excited to have an ounce of free time to try more painting with light!

Advanced Techniques: "And the leaves that are green turned to brown"-Glass Assignment
The changing colors of the leaves come inside Lee Hills Hall studio on October 11, 2009. Columbia is covered with a blanket of multi-colored leaves falling from the trees. Fall began this year on September 22, and temperatures have been dropping ever since.
I used a bright-field set up for my objects. I used the light table, a large vertical softbox, a strobe with a snoot and orange gel, a white card and a strobe used for bouncing off the white card. I had an A+B combination with C isolated on the 1250x set at -2. Irene Rojas assisted on this photo shoot.
An Outtake:
**The title comes from the song, Leaves That Are Green, by Simon and Garfunkel.

Advanced Techniques: Classmate Portrait
For the classmate portrait assignment, I worked with Colleen Lefholz. I have been eager to learn about studio lighting for awhile. I learned so much working on this project and I know there is still so much to learn. After talking to Colleen for a bit, I learned that she is a cake decorator. I love food, so I figured that this would be the perfect opportunity to not only use food during a shoot, but bring out a unique part of her life.
Multi-Light Source Select:
Colleen Lefholz licks frosting off a wooden spoon while posing for a portrait on September 28th, 2009. Colleen is a cake decorator during the summer and holidays in her hometown of St. Charles, MO. “When my friends find out that I am a cake decorator, I get a lot of requests for cake.” Colleen said during her portrait session.

Light Diagram:
For the single light portrait, I used a soft box and tried to go for the Rembrandt lighting. I metered ISO200, f/13 and 1/125 of a second. I had Colleen turn her back to me and slowly turn back around with her head directed at me. I wanted to do soft lighting to reflect the Colleen's self proclaimed soft spokeness. I bracketed, but I think I under exposed the image.
